Moderate earthquake hits Iraq

(MENAFN) An earthquake of a 5.0 magnitude has rattled border areas neighboring Iran, and also reached the Iraqi capital Baghdad in central Iraq.

The U.S. Geological Survey declared that the earthquake took place at around 5:00 p.m. (1400 GMT), near Iraqi-Iranian border inside Iran, and hit 10 km deep into the ground.

Meanwhile, a leader of the Iraqi seismic monitoring, confirmed: "an earthquake in Iran measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, took place north of the Sumar region of Iran, which lies 20 km northeast of the Iraqi border town of Mandalay."

The earthquake was reportedly sensed in Baghdad and the provinces of Diyala, Sulaimaniyah, Kirkuk, Salahudin, Wasit and Maysan.
