Flights between Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran’s Kish Island launched

SULAIMANI, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— Two-way air flight between Kish Island and Sulaimani city in Iraqi Kurdistan Region was launched after first airplane carrying tourists from Kurdistan Region landed in the island on Sunday, IRNA news agency reported.

First Sulaimani-Kish flight was handled by Mahan Airline which brought 103 tourists from Iraqi Kurdistan to the island on Sunday.

The flight was launched to facilitate visits and support tourism industry will be operated every Sunday and Wednesday.

Director General of Kish Airports Ezzatollah Mohammadi told reporters that the flight was established after a year of follow-up.

With the addition of this route, the number Kish International Airport’s flights hits 21 domestic and foreign destinations, he said.

Establishment of the flight is significant for Kish Island as it will reinforce tourism industry in the economic and commercial terms, he said.

Kish Island is a 91.5-square-kilometre (35.3 sq mi) resort island in Bandar Lengeh County, Hormozg?n Province off the southern coast of Iran in the Persian Gulf. Owing to its free trade zone status, the island is touted as a consumer’s paradise, with numerous malls, shopping centres, tourist attractions, and resort hotels. It has an estimated population of almost 40,000 residents and about 1 million visitors annually.

Kish Island is the third most-visited vacation destination in Southwest Asia, after Dubai and Sharm el-Sheikh. Tourists from many countries for which Iran typically requires a visa, who wish to enter Kish Free Zone, are exempt from having to obtain a visa. For those travelers, travel permits are issued on arrival by Kish officials and are valid for 14 days.
