PM approves dismissing Nineveh governor accused of corruption: source
Prime
Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi approved a proposal by the fact-finding committee in
Nineveh to dismiss Nofal al-Akoub, the city's governor, a source said,
amid accusations of corruption.
Hassan
al-Allaf, incumbent deputy governor, is the most likely to succeed Akoub,
according to the source.
He
added that all the members of the fact-finding committee have voted to dismiss
the current governor, except only one member.
"Through a diligent work of the
fact-finding committee in Nineveh province, very serious files have been
revealed regarding unprecedented financial violations of al-Akoub,” panel head
Osama al-Nujaifi said earlier in March.
The MP called for "swift measures, including the suspension
of the governor's work to prevent any influence on integrity committees and judicial
authorities that investigate him." He also called for taking legal
measures to bar the governor from travelling abroad.
According to Transparency International,
Iraq ranks among the world's worst countries in terms of government
corruption.
