Over 2,600 people were kidnapped by Islamist groups in the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin during the past 12 months, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

A report by the London-based monitoring group said the fate of more than 1000 abductees in Afrin remains unknown after months, adding that the militiamen of Sileman Sha were responsible for the recent abductions and that they had asked for US$20,000 as ransom to release the abductees.

Several reports previously said that the Turkey-backed Islamist groups often kidnap civilians arbitrarily to ask for ransom from their families.

Earlier this week, a human rights watchdog in Arfin said 29 civilians were abducted on Friday and Saturday in central Afrin and villages of Alkana and Khalil Gulkoi.

Last year, Afrin came under a massive military offensive known as “Olive Branch Operation” by the Turkish army and its Syrian rebel allies. Since then, the Kurdish people have been exposed to violations.
