Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi, on Friday, called on US companies to invest in Iraq, stressing the need to strengthen economic partnership between Washington and Baghdad.

This came after a meeting in Washington of Halbousi accompanied by a parliamentary delegation, with Mitch McConnell, Senate majority leader, a statement by Halbousi's office said.

During the meeting, both sides discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and means of enhancing these relations in various fields.

"The extremist terrorist organization is not only targeting Iraq, it is targeting the world, and the international community must unite to fight it," Halbousi said, referring to ISIS terrorist group.

He said that Iraq made sacrifices on behalf of the whole world, and achieved the military victory with the "blood" of its sons and the support of "friends," including the US.

Halabousi added that there are still dormant cells belonging to ISIS that still exist in his country.

"Iraq needs two types of projects, including the long-term [projects] such as the oil and energy sector, and the short and medium-term projects in education, health and housing," he stated.

For his part, McConnell expressed Washington's commitment to support Iraq, respect its sovereignty as a strong ally, and work to establish economic relations that serve the interests of the two friendly peoples.
