ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Days of heavy rainfall and flooding has left homes in rural areas of Syrian Kurdistan’s (Rojava) Qamishli damaged as civilians call on the self-administration and other organizations to provide support.

Torrential rain has flooded streets and homes in areas between Qamishli and Tirbespiye as residents use their own means to repair the damage to their homes. The people of Qamishli are appealing to the self-administration of north and east Syria to provide further support.

“Our villages are full of water. There is no power. No one has come to our aid – no government, no organization – nobody has offered us support,” one resident told Kurdistan 24.

Another Qamishli native said residents are reinforcing their homes as forecasts warn of more poor weather conditions.

“We’re currently preparing shelters in areas higher above the ground, so we have some places to flee in case the weather gets worse,” the resident said. “This is a natural disaster, so there is not much we can do but have patience.”

Over the weekend, one woman and a child were killed after a home collapsed in Qamishli due to flooding from heavy rainfall, according to a source in the area.

Weeks of rain downpour have affected other neighboring countries in the Middle East. Many parts of Iran and Iraq have been the sites of intermittent but often extreme rainfall for the past two weeks.

In Iran, it has proven itself to be a significant natural disaster, as the ensuing floods have claimed the lives of at least 45 people, according to national media reports.

In the Kurdistan Region, a Kurdish family was forced to abandon their home after floods nearly submerged their whole house.
