Since Julian Assange’s arrest last week following revocation of the Wikileaks founder’s asylum status, Ecuador has issued a statement saying that it has suffered 40 million cyber-attacks on the web pages of its public institutions.

Commenting on the increased cyber-attacks the country has experienced, Patricio Real, Ecuador’s deputy minister for information and communication technology, said the attacks, which started on Thursday, had “principally come from the United States, Brazil, Holland, Germany, Romania, France, Austria and the United Kingdom,” adding that some countries from South America also participated in the attack.

Assange was arrested last week and hauled out of the Ecuadorean embassy in London by British police. Assange had taken refuge there nearly seven years previously to avoid being extradited to Sweden over sexual assault charges.
