ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Weeks of torrential rain across the region of Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) has caused hardships for residents in local villages, particularly in the city of Qamishlo where a man lost his life after he was electrocuted to death.

Residents in the village of Antariye in Qamishlo were left in shock after they found one of their neighbors laying in a puddle in front of his home.

“Myself and other neighbors saw the man in a pool of water by his porch. Two other men ran to his aid and dragged the man to a dry area,” resident Yasmin Salih told Kurdistan 24.

“It was obvious he was electrocuted as there was an electrical pole next to where he lay,” Salih added. “The man was eventually pronounced dead.”

Ibrahim Walid, one of the men who saw the deceased lying in the puddle before rushing over to help him, said he did all he could to revive the man before the ambulance arrived, but it was too late as it appeared he had been dead for over an hour.

The people of Antariye and its surrounding areas experience hardships during the winter season as well as the spring due to high levels of rainfall and poor weather.

Moreover, residents have had a tough time dealing with the damage the recent rainfall has caused to their homes. In many cases, water from the streets pours into their houses and farms where many have lost livestock.

“Our hardship is not new; it is an old issue. Water from rainfall spills into our homes,” resident Yusef Yaqob told Kurdistan 24.

“We call on the competent officials to help us find a solution. Nothing has been done, but we hope the relevant authorities can come to our aid, they see our conditions with their own eyes.”
