ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Kurdistan Region is hosting the 4th Erbil International Monodrama Festival for five days this week with artists from across the region participating to share their craft.

"The aim is to share each other’s experiences. It’s also to know how drama is developing in neighboring countries, and to know their perspectives on drama," Hiwa Suaad, the technical manager of Erbil Theatre, told Rudaw.

It is attracting stage artists from Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, and Iraq. After each show, participants join a discussion on the art form.

"The experience and exchanges will have an impact on drama in Erbil and the Kurdistan Region in general. Sometimes the capacities are limited and the artists have to sacrifice. Kurdish artists sacrificed a lot," said the head of the Arab Artists Union, Musaad Foda.

The festival concludes on Thursday with an award ceremony.

"Lots of academic efforts have been done. They reached a very good level. The exchange programs between countries are supportive. This interaction has an impact and serves new ideas. It will develop from theatre to theatre," explained Ikram Ishqar, an actress from Lebanon.

Despite cycles of violence, the Middle East has a rich history of fine arts. Film in particular has been a popular art form with shows and series widely followed across the region.
