DUHOK, Kurdistan Region – A two year old boy was killed on Wednesday after fire broke out in his family’s tent at a camp in Duhok.

“It was an electrical fire and it quickly burned the whole tent,” and eyewitness told Rudaw.

"When the fire broke out, the mother was in another tent and the father was outside. We had no idea that there was a kid inside when the fire was burning,” the eyewitness added.

Khairulla Khairo, 2, was killed.

He and his family lived in a camp for displaced Yezidis, Kabartw-2 Camp, in Duhok.

The Kurdistan Region is hosting 1,127,400 registered internally displaced persons (IDPs), according to the most recent figures from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s humanitarian office. Of those, 384,588 are sheltering in Duhok province.

The majority IDPs and refugees are living in host communities – just 21 percent of IDPs are living in 29 camps across the region.

Fire is a constant risk in the camps, as is flooding in heavy winter rains.
