Iraqi troops arrest a suspected Islamic State militant

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Interior Ministry announced on Sunday the capture of two Islamic State militants in Mosul city.

“SWAT forces of the Nineveh Operations Command arrested two Islamic State militants while driving a car in al-Yarmouk district in the western side of Mosul,” Iraqi TV channel Dijlah quoted the ministry’s security media center as saying in a statement.

According to the statement, the two militants were arrested with a pistol and two explosive charges in their possession.

The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city.

Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.

In December 2017, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced full liberation of Iraqi lands, declaring end of war against IS members.

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi military announced on Wednesday the destruction of three Islamic State tunnels in Makhoul Mountains in the northern province of Salahuddin.

“Security forces of Salahuddin Operations Command carried out a military campaign in Makhoul Mountains, managing to destroy three tunnels that were used by IS militants,” Alghad Press quoted spokesman for the Security Media Center Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool as saying in a statement.

“The troops found foodstuffs, blankets and bedding inside the tunnels,” the statement added.

Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in November 2017 with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.

IS declared a self-styled “caliphate” in a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014. A government campaign, backed by a U.S.-led international coalition and paramilitary forces, was launched in 2016 to retake IS-held regions, managing to retake all havens, most notably the city of Mosul, the group’s previously proclaimed capital.

Despite the group’s crushing defeat at its main havens across Iraq, Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks against troops with security reports warning that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi warplanes killed on Wednesday three Islamic State terrorists in the oil-rich province of Kirkuk, a military spokesman was quoted as saying.

“Acting on accurate intelligence reports, Iraqi jet fighters targeted three terrorists riding a motorbike in al-Mahkour village in Kirkuk,” Alghad Press quoted spokesman for the Security Media Center Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool as saying.

“The airstrike left the terrorists dead,” added the spokesman.

Between June 2014 and December 2017, Islamic State seized large areas of Iraq and led a campaign of widespread violence and systematic violations of international human rights and humanitarian law – acts that amounted to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and possible genocide.

Baghdad’s central criminal court.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – An Iraqi court has sentenced a man to life in jail over accusations of supplying Islamic State militants with money.

“The Central Criminal Court in Baghdad has sentenced a man to life imprisonment as he was found guilty of handing over money to IS militants in Hawija,” a town which had fallen to the extremist group in June 2014, Alghad Press website quoted the Iraqi judiciary as saying in a statement.

“The defendant admitted delivering money to IS militants in return for $100,” said the statement, adding that the verdict was issued pursuant to article no. 4 of the anti-terrorism law.

Iraq’s anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped jihadists even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks.

Iraqi courts have sentenced many of Islamic State members, including a big number of female members, to death over joining the militant group.

The exact number of detained militants is still unknown, however, it’s estimated to be at thousands. It’s also unclear how many members are likely to face death sentences.

Human rights groups have always criticized collective death sentences issued by Iraqi courts, claiming that some detainees are tortured and threatened.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces.

Baghadad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq is under pressure from the United States and Iran involving conflicting calls regarding the retention of Shia-led forces that played a major role in the fight against Islamic State militants.

Iraqi Alghad Press said the United States is demanding Iraqi premier Adel Abdul Mahdi to disband the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF),  aka al-Hashd al-Shaabi, while Iran is warning against attempts to weaken the force.

It said that while Iranian Foreign Minister,, Javad Zarif, who was on a visit to Baghdad on Monday, carried an unpublicized message to the government “warning against attempts to weaken the PMF”, Abdul-Mahdi, according to Saudi-owned al-Arabiya, asked the U.S. side “to give him sometime” to respond to its renewed call to freeze and disarm the force.

Alghad Press pointed to what it described as “a regional lobby, backed by Iraqi figures working on weakening the force as a premise to its dissolution”.

The PMF, composed of some 60 forces, mostly Shia, was formed as per a call from the Iraqi top Shia clergy to fight Islamic State Sunni extremists. Many of the troops working under the PMF pledge strong allegiance to Iran and are believed to have enjoyed generous finances and training from the Islamic republic. The force won official Iraqi government recognition as a national force late 2016. Several of its current and former leaders are now members of the Iraqi parliament elected in May.
