DARBANDIKHAN, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish tribes in Darbandikhan, a lakeside community near the city of Halabja, held a special festival for Newroz on March 21, celebrating their traditional nomadic culture and their prowess with horses.

The Shameran tribe and 15 others came together for Kurdish new year to revive traditional cuisine, tents, clothing, dance, and their celebrated horsemanship.

“Some youths nowadays don’t know what these cultural things are,” said Aso Ibrahim, a tribal horseman. “We want to revive them and make them familiar for the young generations.”

Almost 10,000 people turned out for the festival.
