A Turkish court on Thursday handed down a 42-year prison sentence to Selahattin Demirtas, a former leader of the pro-Kurdish HDP party, for his alleged involvement in the deadly 2014 protests that occurred during the Islamic State group’s takeover of the Syrian town of Kobane. Alongside Demirtas, former HDP co-chair Figen Yuksekdag was also sentenced to 30 years and three months by the court in Sincan, on the outskirts of Ankara.
