DUHOK, Kurdistan Region — Hassan Khalaf and Zaytoon Haji Murad are getting married — both are displaced Yezidis in separate IDP camps. They forged their relationship on Facebook, having never met in person.
"I am very pleased that I could get what was in my heart in this life. We need help because we are little people. It is a nice feeling that we are getting married. Thanks be to God," Murad, the bride said.
She resides in Sharia Camp in Duhok, while her groom lives in Mam Rashan Camp.
"We have known each other for 2-3 months. Zaytoon is very beautiful and she is always nice. We ask for help or to be given a salary because we don’t have any income," said Khalaf.
Both are dwarves.
As is tradition, Hassan ceremonially 'abducted' Zaytoon to his uncle’s house in a village.
"I feel comfortable that my nephew has found that girl and we met with their family. We’ve met each other and we paid the dowry. We feel very comfortable; tomorrow is the wedding," said Khalaf's uncle, Omer Hassan.
