Thousands of people gathered in Akre on Wednesday night to usher in the 2719th Newroz holiday.
People carried torches up a winding hill in the historically diverse city about 60 kilometers north of the Kurdistan Region's capital of Erbil.
Thursday is a national holiday and events will continue to celebrate the start of spring, renewal, and the new year.
