Kurds in Rojava's Spiye celebrate Newroz near Turkish border

Situated in Hasaka governorate near the border with Turkey and the Kurdistan Region, people in Spiye (al-Qahtaniyah) took to the streets to celebrate Newroz on Friday.

The new year is timed with the spring equinox and marks a time of rebirth and renewal after winter.

Kurds celebrate by wearing traditional clothing, dancing, singing, and feasting together.

As Kurds in Syria approach the military defeat of ISIS, the 2719th Newroz holds a special meaning where they have carved out a self-administrative area, Rojava.
