ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) –Kurdish security forces on Sunday arrested two individuals attempting to smuggle 10,000 USD in counterfeit money at a border crossing between the Kurdistan Region and Iran.
“The Directorate of Drug Prevention of the Kurdistan Region confiscated $10,000 in counterfeit money and arrested two suspects whose initials are H. A. G and R.S.A, with one of them carrying an Iranian passport,” the directorate said in a statement it released on Monday.
“They intended to take the money to the Kurdistan Region and exchange it in Erbil’s markets.”
The statement added authorities had already launched an investigation into the case.
Kurdish local police and security forces regularly confiscate significant amounts of counterfeit money, of all different currencies, in the Kurdistan Region. While some of the forgeries are made within Iraq and the Kurdistan region, others are smuggled from abroad and neighboring countries.
