HEWLÊR-Erbil, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Council of Ministers on Wednesday approved a draft pension and salary reform bill, which will now be returned to the Kurdistan Parliament for a vote.

The meeting was chaired by KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani.

The reform bill will include changes to the Kurdistan’s pension, salary, stipends, and privilege systems.

“Reform is an ongoing process and in the next phases it will include all departments from the government,” Barzani said.

“Since the ninth cabinet was formed, we have promised to send this bill to the Parliament because it is a project all the parties in the government have worked on and participated in,” he added.

The bill was approved by the Council of Ministers unanimously.

In order for the changes to become law, they will have to be approved by Parliament, which has already returned the legislation to the government for changes once before.

Senior officials should not get pensions: Opposition New Generation lawmaker

New Generation Movement lawmaker Kawa Abdulqadir said on Wednesday that senior officials should not receive pensions as a part of a government reform plan.

Abdulqadir said in a statement posted on his social media that, if not removed entirely, they should be lowered considerably so that they match the pensions of normal employees and consider the marital status and educational degree of the person.

“All illegal pensions should be removed from the government’s payroll. There are dozens of people that have been illegally getting pensions over the years,” he added.
