The Government of Iraq closed the border crossing between Sinjar and the Syrian Kurdish areas, known as Rojava, on Thursday (January 24).

NRT Digital Media reporter Nazir Shingali said a number of people have gathered at the crossing to protest the decision and call on the authorities to reopen it.

“The border should be reopened because we have relatives from Rojava and we visit each other,” a protester told NRT Digital Media.

Bare border crossing was opened by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG) after the liberation of Sinjar in November 2015.

It is now controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Rojava and by the Iraqi army and Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS) on the Iraqi side.

It was not immediately clear why Baghdad had decided to close the border or when it would reopen.
