Most of Abducted Yezidis Held in Syria Now: Official
The majority of Yezidis who are still in Islamic State (IS) captivity are reportedly kept in Syria, said a Kurdish official.
Speaking to BasNews on latest updates about the remaining Yezidi captives, Hussein Qaedi, head of Kurdistan Region’s special office for Yezidi abductees, explained that they continue devising new plans to rescue the Yezidis.
He pointed out that each individual case of one group of Yezidis is treated separately before the rescue operations.
“The majority of them are kept in Syria now… based on the location and timing, we devise plans to rescue them,” Qaedi said.
He revealed that 11 Yezidis have been rescued since 1 January this year, among them was a family of seven.
The IS jihadists attacked the predominantly Yezidi town of Sinjar in northern Iraq in August 2014. They killed a large number of civilians from the religious community and displaced hundreds of thousands.
According to official documents, a total of 6,417 Yezidi women, men and children were abducted by IS in 2014. Since then, 3,342 have been rescued or managed to escape.
