AKRE, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— A civilian who shot himself while broadcasting a video live on Facebook on Tuesday night has succumbed to his injuries, a hospital official said in Akre city in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Hakim Goran died from injuries sustained in an act of suicide.

Head of the press office of the health directorate in Akre Sabah Zuher said during a press conference that Goran had undergone surgery performed by an American team of experts and local doctor Ghazi Zebari.

Zuher said that during the four-hour surgery, Goran had received 40 bottles of blood.

Goran shot himself in the left side of his chest with a Kalashnikov rifle on a mountain near Akre district, north of Erbil, while he was live on Facebook.

He said that he would commit suicide hours before he shot himself. Despite the warning, the authorities in the area failed to stop the incident from happening.

During the referendum in 2017, he gained notoriety for staying on a mountain in Akre district for several months, saying he would not come down until an independent Kurdistan was declared.

During an interview with Kurdistan24 TV on the first anniversary of the controversial Kurdistan vote on Sept. 30, he stated his new condition for a return to society: unity among the Kurdish people and, more importantly, the political parties. Goran had visitors coming to see him from all over the region to observe his way of life.
