A defiant Saddam Hussein had vowed vengeance on Britain and America for its actions.

He ranted about his "Satanic enemies" and predicted a great victory for Iraq and the Arab people, calling on them to strike back at their barbaric attackers.

Dressed in military uniform, he emerged from hiding to tell them: "We will not compromise or kneel in the face of injustice".

48 years ago (1974) Teachers were set to get a Christmas cracker of a pay boost - with rises of up to £40 a week.

A seven-month inquiry into teachers' pay recommended weekly increases of between £5 and £40, which was to be backdated to May 24.

56 years ago (1966) The United Nations General Assembly endorsed the Outer Space Treaty binding the signatories to use outer space, including the Moon, only for peaceful purposes.
