The federal government of Iraq has approved plans to connect the country with Gulf states through neighboring Kuwait to enhance regional connectivity and foster greater trade and investment in the broader region.

"The transit project linking the Gulf countries to Iraq via Kuwait was approved and referred to the General Company for Communications and Informatics to proceed with contracting procedures," Iraqi News Agency reported on Sunday, quoting a statement from the federal Ministry of Communications.

This project aims to contribute to maximizing Iraq's revenues and stability by attracting international investors to the country, and turning Iraq into a strong competitor in the global telecommunications market."

Baghdad also announced in April of this year plans to build a long modern railway stretching from the southern Port of Faw in Basra to Turkey to boost trade and commerce with neighboring countries and European nations. The railway is set to be completed in 2028.
