ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Two artillery shells landed in Kani Masi town centre, causing material damage, the mayor stated.

The shells struck at midday, Mayor Sarbast Sabri Akraye confirmed to Rudaw, blaming Turkey.

Three houses were damaged, one of them severely, Akraye added. The three homes all belonged to Christians.

There was nobody at home when the houses were hit and there were no injuries, the official stated.

Kani Masi is located in the Amedi region of Duhok province, near the border with Turkey.

Turkish forces frequently target alleged PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region’s mountains. The PKK has its headquarters in the Qandil district near the borders with Iran and Turkey.

Turkish airstrikes targeting the PKK sometimes result in civilian casualties.

At least two Turkish soldiers were killed in a skirmish with the PKK on Saturday.

The PKK is an armed political group that has clashed with Turkish state for decades. It claims to be fighting for greater political, minority and cultural rights in Turkey. Turkey has had a military presence in Kurdistan Region since the early 1990s.
