ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Swedish-Kurdish football club Dalkurd FF got back to winning ways on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over opponents Degerfors in Sweden’s second-tier Superettan league.

Despite soaking the pressure from Dagerfors for large parts of the first half, the Kurdish club was on the scoresheet early when defender Robin Tranberg scored after 11 minutes.

Dalkurd was happy to sit back and let their opponents attack as keeper Andreas Andersson made two crucial saves to keep his side ahead.

Moments before the end of the first half, Dalkurd doubled its lead through an own goal from Dagerfors’ Gustav Granath in the 41st minute.

Dagerfors began the second half with intent as they looked to get back into the game but were unable to beat Andersson who made five saves. They eventually pulled a goal back through Erik Bjorndahl in stoppage time, but it was not enough as Dalkurd held on for the 2-1 victory.

The win means Dalkurd climb out of the relegation zone and is now in 11th place with 10 points.

Dalkurd’s (3-1-5) next league match is at home to ÖIS (3-3-3) on May 28 at 8 p.m. Erbil time.

Based in the Swedish city of Borlänge, Dalkurd was founded on Sept. 26, 2004, by nine Kurdish immigrants as a social project. The club has since built academies in both Sweden and the Kurdistan Region.

The team’s colors are symbolic of Kurdistan, with the Kurdish flag included in the crest on their shirts.

Dalkurd had bull-dozed its way up the ranks of Swedish football since its 2005 introduction in Tier Seven, winning five promotions in its first five seasons.

However, after a string of poor results in Sweden’s top division, Dalkurd were relegated on the last day of the 2018 season, finishing in 15th place with 24 points (6-6-18).
